ALEX EPTON, A.K.A. XXXCHANGE,
Alex first got his musical legs as a hardcore drummer while growing up in Baltimore, MD. After his debaucherous years in high school ( good-bye, st. ides!), he moved north to attend Berklee college of music in Boston to study Drumming. It was here that his tastes broadened into the genres of Bassa-nova, African tribal drumming, and International Pop, which all have been added to his musical spice rack. During his last year of college, Alex interned at DFA, the influential dance record label in NYC, and also started work on songs with his friend Naeem Juwan Hanks. When Alex and Naeem finally gathered enough songs, their friend from Philly, Diplo, loved the pile of music and put them in touch with Ninja tune to release the songs. They settled on calling themselves SPANK ROCK and titled the album ” YOYOYOYOYO”. Propelled by Alex’s eclectic production, the album was considered one of the most ground breaking hip – hop albums of the decade, garnering amazing reviews from NME, Spin, Pitchfork and Rolling Stone.
Alex and Naeem parted ways in 2008 and Alex has moved on to be a highly sought after producer and mixer, producing albums for the Kills, the Death Set and Kele Orekeke (Bloc Party) solo album, to name a few…. and has done remixes for Cee Lo, Tv on the Radio, Kool Keith, Bjork, Thom York, Kylie Minogue, Beck , Charlotte Gainsbourg, and Lily Allen.
